How Many CPU Threads Do I Have? Learn How To Check

In today’s developing world, almost every one of us uses computers for different purposes. There was a time when we depended on cyber cafes to perform our computer-based assignments.

Again, we also went to video game parlors to play our favorite games with our adorable friends. But now,  these things have been far easier to do, with our ever-changing lifestyles. Now, we don’t need to go out to any cyber cafe anymore. Rather, we can anytime afford a computer for our day-to-day jobs.

But when we go to purchase a computer or want to run certain games or programs on our existing PC, we often like to know how many CPU threads do I have. While many people get confused about the fact, you can easily know that from the manufacturer’s manual with your product.

In today’s tutorial, we will go through all the related aspects of this CPU thread. Well, without spending more time on this introductory part, let’s jump into our main discussion.

The concept of threads

When we hear of the term ‘threads’, many of us often can’t catch what they actually mean, why they’re so important, and how they really work. Hence, before we know how many CPU threads do I have, we should learn the basic things about these threads. Okay, let’s go over the concept of threads for better clarification.

Generally speaking, threads are an important part of the core that allows the CPU to do multiple tasks at once. However, they are not any physical component of the CPU. Rather, they are some virtual components, codes, or directions that enhance the efficiency of the physical core of a CPU by virtually diving into different cores.

However, if we want to know the number of threads, we must first know how many cores we have in our CPUs. This is because the number of threads relies on the number of cores somehow and each core contains two threads in it. So, if we purchase a dual-core processor computer, we will get four threads in it. Therefore, we will be able to perform four tasks at a single time using that computer.

Finally, we can say that threads are too important for the functions of a computer. So, when we need to perform multiple intensive tasks on our computers, we should buy computers with lots of threads.

Multithreading or Hyper-threading:

Multithreading or hyper-threading has been a popular term in this modern era.

Famous technology company Intel Corporation first introduced this term to modern computers. This multithreading technology increases the power of the core almost two times.

As a result, a single-core CPU works as a dual-core processor. Similarly, an octa-core processor acts as 18-cores. And we can enjoy smoother and faster performance.

How to find out how many CPU threads do I have?

As we know the importance of CPU threads, we should learn the methods of how the CPU threads can be measured. Actually, there are several ways to find out the number of threads. Well, let’s go over those methods sequentially.

1 Searching the manufacturer’s information

One of the easiest ways to get the accurate number of the CPU threads is to search the manufacturer’s information. All the CPU manufacturers have a list of their CPU models and their specifications. So, you can easily have the number of threads of any specific CPU model by a quick search to the manufacturer’s website.

You can also get the same information from any third-party site that basically reviews different CPU models on their website.

Apart from these two, you may collect the brochures of any local CPU selling store.

However, among these three, a manufacturer’s website serves as the most reliable source for products’ information because a manufacturer always has the most accurate data for their customers.

2 Checking from the computer

When we have already installed the CPU in the motherboard, we can still know the information about the processor by using some simple methods.

Use of task manager:

Task a useful and handy tool for Windows OS. We can get all the necessary information about the resources and running processes of the device with the help of this program.

But how to access the Task Manager program? Actually, there are four different ways to access Task Manager

  1. We can press the keyboard shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+Delete). Then, the security menu will appear before us. From there, we have to select the Task Manager option to access this program.
  2. We may also go to the start menu and type Task Manager in the search bar. We will get the Task Manager program in the search result. Now, we just need to have a simple click on it.
  3. Another way to access Task Manager is simply right-clicking on the taskbar and then, clicking on the Task Manager option.
  4. We can also go for the easiest way to access the Task Manager program. And that is pressing the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl+Shift+Escape).
  • When we get into the Task Manager program, we will see an option named “More Details” on the left-bottom of the window.
  • We have to click on it to open the next window.
  • We will find some tabs over the window.
  • As we need the number of CPU threads, we have to switch over to the performance tab.
  • There we will get some computer resources such as Memory, Disc, and CPU.
  • Now, we have to click the Disc option where we will find the date of cores and logical processors. (Note: Logical Processors are synonymous with Threads)

Use of run command:

Other than Task Manager, we can also go for another technique and that is using the Run command. To use this method, we will follow a simple process.

  • We will press the Window+R to activate the Run command.
  • A tiny window will appear before us where we have to type “msinfo32” and press the OK button.
  • Now, a window will appear before us where we will get the system information.
  • At this point, we must make sure that we are on the System Summary tab.
  • On the right side of the System Summary window, we will find a list of some items.
  • Among them, we have to find the Processor.
  • There we will get all the information about the CPU including the threads’ number under the value column.

There is another way we can use the Run command to see the number of threads of the processor. The steps to follow includes:

  • Press the Windows+R to activate the Run command.
  • Place the cursor on the textbox, type “wmic”, and click the OK button or press the enter key.
  • Write the command “CPU get numberOfLogicalProcessors” and press the enter key to get the result.

Use of command prompt:

Another way of getting the number of CPU threads is the use of Command Prompt. Let’s go through the steps of this method.

  • First, we have to press Windows+x or just click on the start button.
  • We will find the Command Prompt (Admin) option in that window.
  • In case we don’t find the Command Prompt option in the window, we can go to the search bar and type CMD.
  • We will find the Command Prompt there.
  • We will just open it and type the command to know CPU threads.
  • The command would be “WMIC CPU GET DeviceID, NumberofLogicalProcessors”.
  • Finally, by pressing the enter key, we will get our result.

3 Using third-party software

There is much third-party software that helps in finding the number of CPU threads. Let’s look over some of that software.

Activating the Intel® Processor identification utility:

We can use the Intel® Processor Identification Utility software to know all the information about the processor.  To this software, we have to download this software on our device. After activation of the software, we will get the information about the cores and threads under the Processor Frequency tab.

Installing CPU-Z:

CPU-Z is another third-party software that provides all the information of processors. We have to first install this software on our computer.  Then, we will be able to get all the necessary information about our CPU.

After the installation, we will find this software either on our home screen or the start menu.

FAQ

Which CPU model has the most threads?

Answer: There are so many CPUs available in the market that ensure high-performance.  Among them, Intel Core i9-7980XE Extreme is the best.

It’s 18 cores (36 threads) give the fastest and smoothest processing than any other CPUs we can find.

Conclusion

We just went through some wonderful techniques to determine how many CPU threads do I have on the computer. In addition to this, we have gone through a simple explanation of what CPU threads actually mean and why they are so important for a computer.

Now, we can easily check out the threads of our device processor and update it if we find it necessary.

This is how we can contribute to the health and performance of our PC.  Additionally, we can make better purchase decisions by using the info of CPU cores and threads.
